The Miriam Hospital's Stroke Center received a 2012 Gold Plus
Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association /
American Stroke Association. This is the association's highest honor for
stroke care.
National Stroke Center Certification
The Miriam Hospital earned the elite Gold
Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers,
a national honor awarded to the country's top stroke programs. The
Miriam, which was the first hospital in Rhode Island to be certified a
Primary Stroke Center, holds distinction as the only facility in the
state to be certified four times.
National Stroke Performance Award
The Miriam Hospital received the American Heart Association/American
Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) Gold
Plus Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes our commitment
and success in providing the highest standard of stroke care for
patients, according to evidence-based guidelines. This is the
association’s highest honor for stroke care.
Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer
The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island Hospital and The Leonard
and Adele R. Decof Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Miriam
Hospital have each earned the Outstanding Achievement Award from the
Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. Among
only 90 programs nationwide to receive this honor, this award recognizes
the significant commitment by medical staff, administration and staff at
both hospitals to providing high-quality cancer care to their patients,
as well as meeting and exceeding the standards set by the CoC.
Center of Excellence Designation
The Miriam Hospital was named an American
Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery
Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes surgical programs
with a demonstrated track record of excellence in providing superior and
comprehensive bariatric surgery care.
Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric Surgery
The Miriam Hospital was named an Blue Distinction Center for Bariatric
Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island. The Blue
Distinction program recognizes facilities that meet objective,
evidence-based thresholds for clinical quality, developed in
collaboration with expert physicians and medical organizations.
AACVPR Program Certification
The Miriam Hospital pulmonary rehabilitation program has been awarded
certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Certified AACVPR programs are
recognized as leaders in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary
rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available.
Magnet Hospital Designation
The Miriam Hospital has been recognized for overall nursing excellence
with its fourth consecutive Magnet
hospital designation. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s
Magnet Recognition Program® is nursing’s top honor and is one of the
most prestigious distinctions an organization can receive for
outstanding nursing care. The unanimous decision was based on The Miriam
Hospital’s continued adherence to rigorous national standards of nursing
practice.

Major Teaching Affiliation
Rhode Island Hospital was designated the principal teaching hospital of
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The Miriam
Hospital and Bradley Hospital were designated major teaching affiliates.
Nuclear Medicine Laboratories Are Nationally Accredited
The Miriam Hospital has been awarded two nationally recognized
accreditations for both its general nuclear medicine and nuclear
cardiology laboratories from the Intersocietal Commission for the
Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories. It is one of the first
hospital-based nuclear medicine laboratories in the Untied States to
achieve this accreditation and be recognized for its high commitment to

facilities in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be accredited
by the Intersocietel Commission for the Accreditation of

Breast Cancer Registry Pilot Program
The Breast Center at the Adele R. Decof Comprehensive Cancer Center at
The Miriam Hospital has been chosen by the American Society for Clinical
Oncology (ASCO) as one of 20 sites for its national Breast Cancer
Registry Pilot Program.
National Accreditation Program for Breast Center
The Comprehensive Cancer Centers at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam
Hospital have each received a three-year accreditation from the National
Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).
2009 Advancing Innovation in Healthcare Hospital Award
The Miriam Hospital was awarded the 2009 Advancing Innovation in
Healthcare Hospital Award for the quality improvement initiative,
"Intensive Care Unit Pressure Ulcer Prevention Bundle Leads to a
Preliminary Reduction in Hospital Acquired Ulcers." The emphasis of this
bundle is on prevention and an "all eyes" approach to collaboration on
this important issue. Implementation of these interventions lead to a
reduction of hospital acquired pressure ulcers and a more positive
collegial relationship among the staff involved. The award was given at

The Miriam Hospital Honored for Outstanding Care
Several New England hospitals were named to the 2009 Harvard Pilgrim
Health Care Hospital Honor Roll, which recognizes adult, acute care
hospitals for performance among the top 25 percent of those measured,
nationally.
Hospitals were measured according to a set of composite quality and patient experience measures, as reported by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on Hospital Compare, and Leapfrog patient safety measures. Read more

The Miriam Hospital earned a Gold Performance Award from the American
Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
Stroke Center Gold Performance Achievement Award
The Miriam Hospital received the American Stroke Association's Get With
The Guidelines-Stroke(GWTG—Stroke) Gold Performance Achievement Award.
The award recognizes The Miriam Hospital's commitment to providing
quality stroke care by successfully implementing nationally accepted
standards of care and recommendations for at least 24 months.
Harvard Pilgrim Honor Roll
The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital were named to 2008 Harvard
Pilgrim Hospital Honor Roll and were among only three Rhode Island
hospitals to be recognized.
State's First Pulmonary Rehabilitation Certification
The Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program at The Miriam Hospital received certification
from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
Rehabilitation. The program, located at 208 Collyer Street, is the first
in the state to receive this certification.
Blue Distinction Centers for Complex and Rare
Cancers
The Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital were named Blue
Distinction Centers for Complex and Rare Cancers by Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Rhode Island. Rhode Island and The Miriam are the only two
hospitals in the state to be recognized with this merit.
Ranked Number One Diagnostic Imaging Residency
The diagnostic imaging residency training program at Rhode Island
Hospital, a partnership with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown
University, has been ranked number one in the country. The ranking,
released annually by the American Board of Radiology, objectively
measures residency training programs based on the past five years of
written and oral board examinations. The Rhode Island Hospital-sponsored
graduate medical education
program was ranked number one out of the 186 training programs
across the country. Based at Rhode Island Hospital, residents also spend
one month training at both The Miriam Hospital and Women and Infant's
Hospital each year.
Cardiac Specialty Center Designation
The Miriam Hospital is proud to have been awarded the UnitedHealth
Premium Cardiac Specialty Center designation for 2007 to 2009 in
recognition of quality care. To receive this designation, The Miriam
Hospital met extensive quality and outcomes criteria based on nationally
recognized medical standards and expert advice. The criteria incorporate
measurements of breadth and depth of care, staff experience, emergency
care, quality and outcomes reporting.
Thomson Healthcare top 100 Cardiovascular Care
Thompson Healthcare named Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital
among the nation's top 100 hopsitals for cardiovascular care.
Community Service Award
The Miriam Hospital's RISE tuberculosis clinic receives a Community
Service Award and Governor's Citation from the RI Department of Health.
Solucient 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals
The Miriam Hospital was again named among the nation's 100 top hospitals
for cardiovascular care by Thomson Healthcare, formerly known as
Solucient. Thomson's annual study identifies hospitals that are setting
benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout
the nation. It recognizes the hospitals and their management teams for
superior clinical, operational and financial performance in the area of
cardiovascular service. This is the second consecutive year that Rhode
Island and The Miriam were both named to the list, and they remain the
only hospitals in the state to be honored with this recognition. This is
the sixth time The Miriam Hospital was named in the Solucient top 100
hospitals.

Russell Brady Award
The Miriam Hospital's Project Bridge, which creates and oversees
treatment plans for ex-inmates who are HIV positive, received the
Russell Brady Award for Innovative Services Delivery from the Federal
Health Resources and Services Administration.
Community Leadership Award
Samuel and Esther Chester Immunology Center at The Miriam Hospital has
received the Community Leadership Award from the International Institute
of Rhode Island (IIRI) for providing medical care to refugees with HIV,
the virus that causes AIDS.
