  • Visiting Guidelines

    We understand that visitors are important to patients and their recovery; therefore, our visiting hours are flexible. There may be times when a patient is not feeling well enough for a visit, so we encourage visitors to discuss visiting with the patient and his or her health care team. The guidelines listed below were developed with the care, safety and comfort of patients in mind.

    • To foster a restful environment for all our patients, we ask that you limit the number of visitors to no more than three per patient at one time.
    • Be considerate of other patients by keeping noise to a minimum, both in the room and in waiting areas.
    • When the patient’s door is closed, the curtain is drawn or a sign is present, visitors should check with a nurse at the nurses’ station before entering the room.
    • Visitors may be asked to leave the patient’s room during health care assessments, tests and treatments, or so the patient may rest.
    • Children visiting the hospital must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
    • Visitors who have colds, sore throats or contagious diseases are discouraged from visiting patients.
    • Visitors are not allowed to use patients’ bathrooms.
    • As a patient’s diet may be restricted for tests, procedures or because of a medical condition, visitors should check with the nursing staff before bringing food or beverages to the patient.
    • Latex balloons are not allowed in the hospital.
    • Flower deliveries may be restricted; visitors should check with the nursing staff.
    • Visiting hours and guidelines may slightly differ in critical care units: ICU, CCU, CVTI, CVTS and PACU. Visitors should check with nursing staff for the guidelines for that unit.
    • We request that all visitors please wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer before entering and upon leaving patients’ rooms.

    Late Evening/Early Morning Visits

    Between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., visitors must report to the security desk in the emergency department, located on Fifth Street, where after hours visitation privileges can be sought. The main entrance and all other entrances are closed for security purposes. Once you arrive at the unit, please stop at the nurses’ station to see if the patient is able to have a visitor.

    Quiet Hours

    As rest is an important part of recovery, the hospital observes “quiet hours” from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. If you are visiting during these hours, we ask that you pay special attention to your noise level and the length of your visit.


    Gift Shop

    Located off the main lobby of the Baxt Building, the gift shop offers jewelry, sleepwear, accessories, toys, magazines and stationery. Fresh flowers may also be purchased in the gift shop. The gift shop is operated by both staff and volunteers, and all profits are donated to the hospital. Throughout the years, the proceeds have been used to purchase new hospital equipment and fund facility improvements.

    The gift shop is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. You may contact the gift shop by calling 793-2531 (internally dial ext. 3-2531).

    The Ruth Markoff Coffee Shop

    The coffee shop, located inside the gift shop, was generously donated in loving memory of Ruth Markoff, by her daughters Bernice Gourse, Dorothy Nelson and Gloria Winston. It is a peaceful place to enjoy a light breakfast, full lunch or afternoon snack, or meet for a quiet conference. The Ruth Markoff Coffee Shop proudly brews Starbucks Coffee; enjoy a cup as you peruse the quality offerings of the gift shop. The Ruth Markoff Coffee Shop is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. You may reach the coffee shop by calling 793-2532 (internally dial ext. 3-2532).

    The Marie J. Langlois Café

    The Marie J. Langlois Café, named in honor of our dedicated board member and philanthropist, is located on the first floor of the Baxt Building. The cafeteria is open 14 hours a day, 365 days a year, and you may dine in our spacious dining room or have your meal prepared to go. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., lunch is served from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    A variety of foods are available, from pizza, paninis, omelets and made-to-order cheeseburgers to tilapia with pineapple salsa. All items in our cafeteria are freshly made daily with quality ingredients and offered at reasonable prices. Our chefs are happy to prepare special orders.

    The cafeteria features a five-week menu cycle with surprises added often. Please see this week’s menu, posted in the cafeteria, or call our menu hotline at 793-3223. If you have questions or special requests, you may reach our manager at 793-2605 (internally dial ext. 3-2605).


    ATM

    For your convenience, an ATM is located in the vending area of our cafeteria.


    Communicating With Your Family

    We know that when someone is in the hospital, friends and family want to be informed about their loved one’s recovery and we have found that the best way to do this is for you or your family to designate someone to be the primary contact. Please let us know who will be the primary contact and that person’s phone number. We will place the name and number in your chart, and to ensure patient confidentiality, we will give out information only to your primary contact, that person may then let family and friends know how your recovery is progressing.

    If you have any questions or are unable to identify someone to serve as your contact person, please talk with your nurse.


    Patient Condition Reports

    Our patient information number is 401-793-5600. If a patient is listed in the patient directory, callers will be connected directly to the patients’ room or unit. If you prefer that absolutely no information be given out, please notify the patient access center at 401-793-2200. For more details, please see our patient privacy notice.


    Directions to The Miriam Hospital

    From Points North: Take I-95 South to Exit 25 (North Main Street). Go left off the exit. Follow straight through traffic light and bear right around one way. At first stop sign, take left. At traffic light, take left onto North Main Street. Proceed two blocks and take a right onto Fifth Street. Take left onto Summit Avenue. The hospital is located on left.

    From Points South: Take I-95 North to Exit 25 (North Main Street). Take first of the two sub exits (before bus station). Follow to traffic light. Take left onto North Main Street. Proceed two blocks and take a right onto Fifth Street. Take left onto Summit Avenue. The hospital is located on left.

    From Hope Street: If you are traveling north on Hope Street, toward Pawtucket, turn left onto Fifth Street. If you are traveling south on Hope Street, toward Providence, turn right onto Fifth Street. When you reach the intersection at Summit Avenue, The Miriam Hospital main building will be ahead to your left and the Norman and Rosalie Fain Health Centers will be on the right.

    From Points East: Take I-195 West to I-95 North. Immediately get into the left-hand lane and follow I-95 North to exit 25. Follow the signs to North Main Street. When you arrive at the North Main Street traffic light, turn left. Proceed two blocks to Fifth Street. Turn right onto Fifth Street. As you drive up the hill, The Miriam Hospital main building will be on the left and the Norman and Rosalie Fain Health Centers will be on the right.

    From Route 146 South: Take the Branch Avenue exit and bear left at the light. Follow Branch Avenue to North Main Street, merge and bear left. Take a left at the light and follow North Main Street through two lights. After the second light, take the second right onto Fifth Street. As you go up the hill, The Miriam Hospital main building will be on the left and the Norman and Rosalie Fain Health Centers will be on the right.

    Parking

    Parking for patients and visitors at The Miriam Hospital is free and available in the parking lots located directly across from the main entrance of the hospital on Summit Avenue. Although two-hour parking is available on the side streets surrounding the hospital, we encourage our patients and visitors to park in the parking lots. Parking attendants are stationed in Parking Lot B to assist you with parking should the lots be full. The Miriam Hospital is part of a neighborhood and as such we appreciate your consideration of our neighbors by keeping the noise level to a minimum. If you have any questions regarding parking, please call the security office during regular business hours at 401-793-2700. After business hours, you may call 401-793-2500.

    Please note:  

    • If your car is parked illegally or blocking traffic, it may be towed. Parking illegally in a handicapped space or a hospital fire lane is prohibited and may result in immediate towing.
    • If you have questions regarding parking tickets or towing please call The Miriam Hospital security and parking office at 401-793-2700.

    Security provides coverage of The Miriam Hospital campus 24 hours a day. Please do not hesitate to ask for their assistance.

    Valet

    The Miriam Hospital offers valet parking free of charge from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday at the front door of the main campus.

    Valet service for patients at the Rosalie Fain Health Center and emergency department is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fain and emergency department parking is located at the front door of the Fain building.

    To use our valet service, please drive to the front of the building. A valet will be there to assist you.

    Saturday, Sunday and holiday hours for the Fain Health Center and emergency department are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
