A hospitalist is a hospital-based doctor who manages your medical care, on behalf of your primary care physician, while you are in the hospital.
To ensure that our patients have the best comfort and care, and to assist our community physicians, The Miriam Hospital has created a hospitalist program. All hospitalists at The Miriam Hospital are board-certified internists.
Our hospitalists focus only on inpatient medicine, so you have a dedicated team of hospital-based physicians during your hospital stay. Because they spend their days at The Miriam Hospital rather than in a private practice office, our hospitalists provide inpatient care 24 hours a day.
Why use a hospitalist? As an inpatient, you will receive high-quality care from our hospitalists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—so a hospitalist is always available to consult with your family. If your medications and other orders need to be modified, the hospitalist will handle those changes immediately. Whenever you and your family have questions or concerns, a hospitalist is there to provide answers and explanations. When it's time for you to go home, you'll be discharged without delay.
Your own physician knows you best, so our hospitalists communicate with your doctor throughout your hospital stay. After your discharge, your personal physician will provide follow-up care and will have all the information he or she needs—including a full summary of your hospital care, post-discharge plans and medications.
How do I choose the hospitalist program? To specifically choose the hospitalist service, talk to your personal physician, who will make the arrangements for you if you're planning a hospital stay. Of course, many hospital visits are not planned. If you come to the emergency department and are admitted to the hospital as a result, you'll have the benefit of care by the hospitalist team.
