Weight Management Program 25th Anniversary Celebration Speaker Series

Meeting: Thursday, June 13, 2013, starting at 7:00 PM

To celebrate twenty-five years of serving patients, The Miriam Hospital Weight Management Program is offering a series of special events devoted to weight management issues and concerns. Help us celebrate our milestone and join us for one or all of these free sessions. Sessions are open to current and former weight management program patients, Lifespan and community health care providers, and the general public.

The sessions are free, but registration is required. Space is limited.

Session 1

What’s 25 Years Old and Has Lost Over 500,000 Pounds?

Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 7 P.M.

Vincent Pera, MD will discuss the history of The Miriam Hospital Weight Management Program: present, past and future. In doing so, he will discuss the obesity epidemic in the United States, how the program has treated our patients over the years and provide information regarding our patient outcomes, health improvement and future directions of the program. Light refreshments will be served.

The Miriam Hospital designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

LEAN Cooking

Do you want to make healthy meals for you and your family but are unsure where to start?  This cooking demonstration will help you to build confidence in your ability to create basic, healthy meals in your own kitchen.

Stories of Success: Maintainers in The Miriam Hospital Weight Management Program —A Panel Discussion

Wednesday, January 16, 2013,  7 P.M.

Hear tips from The Miriam Hospital Weight Management Program participants who have successfully maintained their weight loss. Ask questions about what worked for them in weight loss maintenance.

Session 4

There’s an App for That: Consumer Weight Loss Technology

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 7 P.M.

There are now many types of consumer technology that can help with the hard work of building healthy eating and physical activity habits. This presentation will review tools for weight loss that are available on the Internet and smartphones, as well as devices that track physical activity, sleep, and other health habits. New technologies that are currently in development, and soon to be available, will also be discussed.

Moving More!

Thursday, March 14, 2013 7 P.M.

With the warmer weather approaching, now is the perfect time to get outside and increase your activity levels. This presentation will cover suggestions for developing an exercise program and will review the important role of physical activity in weight loss and weight loss maintenance.

Rebuilding Your Wardrobe after Weight Loss

Thursday, April 25, 2013   7 - 8 P.M. 

You have lost weight and have achieved many benefits such as improved health and energy.  There is a dramatic change in your clothing size.  However, building a new wardrobe can be overwhelming.  You may be asking yourself How do I know my size?  What types of clothes will look good on me?  How can I build a wardrobe affordably? This presentation will give you tips on building a wardrobe for the new you!  Stylists from Nordstrom will work with three patients to refresh their style.

Cooking Healthy on a Budget

Have you ever thought that eating healthy costs too much money?  Learn some basic shopping and cooking techniques that will show you how to eat healthy on any budget. 

Whole Foods will host a cooking demonstration.
