Family and Community Medicine

Best defined as a "department without walls," the department of family and community medicine at The Miriam Hospital serves as the clinical home for the family practice physicians who have admitting privileges at the hospital. The department is directed by physician-in-chief Martin Miner, MD.

To best meet the needs of the community, the department is not confined to one place. Instead, the physicians practice in the community where the care is needed, in private practices and community health centers throughout the state.

Family medicine is a specialty that provides comprehensive primary care and preventive services to all members of the family, from newborns to grandparents. Family physicians have unique attitudes and skills. They are qualified to care for all family members regardless of sex, age or type of problem (biological, behavioral, or social). In addition to preventing, recognizing and treating disease, family physicians work to get to know the family and develop long-term relationships with their patients.

We believe in promoting healthy lives, healthy communities, and healthy schools. Our goal is to help you and your family lead a happy, healthy, productive and rewarding life. We work with you to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle that will help prevent injury and disease. In addition to providing quality medical care, we help patients think about "other" parts of life: relationships, lifestyle, habits, working environment and their community.
