Occupational
therapy helps people participate in tasks they want to do through the
therapeutic use of everyday activities or ADL’s (activities of daily
living). Occupational therapists help people recovering from injury or
illness to regain upper extremity function and independence in
daily living skills, and support for older adults experiencing physical
and cognitive changes to remain as sage and independent in their home
environment for as long as possible.
Occupational therapists at The Miriam Hospital provide comprehensive evaluations and treatment plans based on an individual’s needs. Patients frequently seen are those with orthopedic problems such as upper extremity (UE) pain due to tendonitis, cumulative trauma, arthritis or injury, and neurological impairments due to traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or stroke. Treatments include wound care, UE therapeutic exercise, therapeutic activity, ADL training, pain management, cognitive re-training, neuro-muscular re-education, modalities such as ultrasound and iontophoresis, manual therapy and orthotics.
