Newport Hospital is the principal sponsor of the 2012 Citizens Bank Pell
Bridge Run scheduled for Sunday, November 11. The hospital is
sponsoring the race to promote health and wellness among youth and
families of Newport County. The four-mile run/walk begins on the
Jamestown side of the bridge at 6:30 a.m. and ends in downtown Newport.
The unique location and spectacular views makes this event an especially
attractive opportunity for both runners and walkers. Proceeds from the
run will support several Rhode Island charities, including the Newport
County YMCA and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

Funding for the sponsorship is made possible by the Frederick Henry
Prince Memorial Fund at Newport Hospital. The fund is a gift from
the Frederick Henry Prince 1932 Trust, conferred to Newport Hospital by
Elizabeth Prince of Newport and her children, Diana Oehrli, Guillaume de
Ramel, and Regis de Ramel. The fund supports the hospital’s mission to
improve the health status of all the residents Newport County by making
grants to entrepreneurial and innovative individuals and programs that
encourage participation in athletic activities, combat the use of
alcohol and drugs, and promote emotional and psychological well-being
among youth and families.

Last year the fund provided grants to eight deserving programs across
Newport County and is now accepting applications for funding for 2013.
To apply for a grant or for further information, go to www.fhprincememorialfund.org.
An advisory committee, chaired by Guillaume de Ramel, with
committee members Lori Allan, RN; Jane Beezer; Gus Cordeiro; Patricia
Kidder; and Roger Warburton evaluate the proposals and recommend grant
awards to the Newport Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees.

Newport Hospital this month began offering a new program from the
National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. The program, called the Period
of PURPLE Crying, is provided to help parents understand the crying
of healthy, full-term newborns.

Shaken baby syndrome is an all-too-common result of parental frustration
with a baby’s crying. The new program offers an opportunity for parents
to learn about babies’ crying characteristics from more than 25 years of
research on infant crying conducted worldwide. The program is designed
and approved by pediatricians, public health nurses, child development
experts, and parents.

While the program is being implemented in birthing centers around the
country, Newport Hospital is the first in Rhode Island to offer it. For
more information, call the hospital’s birthing center at 845-1110.

Newport Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of
Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

The designation indicates that the hospital is fully accredited in
mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and
ultrasound-guided biopsy.Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each
breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical
physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that Newport
Hospital has achieved high practice standards in image quality,
personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control
procedures, and quality assurance programs.

Hospital president and CEO August B. Cordeiro says he is proud of the
radiologists and staff involved. “This achievement makes Newport
Hospital a full-service breast health center,” he says. “The
designation, along with our ongoing accreditations for mammography and
breast MRI, shows that women can feel confident in our capabilities for
breast cancer screening, diagnosis, image-guided biopsy, pre-op
planning, and long-term follow-up.”

Bradley Hospital and Newport Hospital have received grants totaling
$250,000 from the Van Beuren Charitable Foundation, a Rhode Island-based
grantmaking organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the
unique characteristics of Newport County and improving the quality of
life for its residents.

The $150,000 awarded to Bradley Hospital will be used to enhance
outpatient child mental health services in Newport County through a
joint program of Bradley Hospital and Newport Hospital. The $100,000
received by Newport Hospital will support the hospital’s interventional
radiology program.

As part of the award to Bradley Hospital, the grant will allow the
hospital to bring a child psychiatrist, psychologist and assorted
outpatient services to Newport Hospital this fall as an extension of
Bradley Hospital. Newport Hospital recognized a greater need for
pediatric mental health care in the local community and created this
partnership with Bradley Hospital.

The goal of the partnership is to eventually offer a full range of
outpatient programs for children in Newport Country, so that they can
receive the treatment they need close to home and possibly avoid the
need for hospitalization.

Through its $100,000 grant, Newport Hospital will expand interventional
radiology services, with the goal of providing minimally invasive
procedures through image-guided technology for treatment of blood clots,
blocked vessels, tumors, and other problems.

This expansion constitutes a nearly $2 million project. The Van Beuren
grant actually adds $150,000 to the program fundraising, because it
comes during a timeframe that allows it to be counted as part of a
challenge grant from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust. That
challenge period ends on June 30, and this grant brings the amount
raised to within $50,000 of the challenge.

Together, the Bradley Hospital and Newport Hospital grants from the Van
Beuren Charitable Foundation create services in Newport County that will
benefit countless children and adults who live locally.

Babineau, MD, Appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Lifespan

On Thursday evening, June 21, 2012, at a special meeting of the Lifespan
board of directors, the board voted to approve the nominee brought forth
by a 13-member search committee for the next president and chief
executive officer of Lifespan. The board voted unanimously to approve
Timothy J. Babineau, MD, as the third president and chief executive
officer of Lifespan, effective August 15, 2012.

Babineau, who is currently president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital
and The Miriam Hospital, will succeed George A. Vecchione, who announced
in October that he would be leaving Lifespan later this year after 13
years at the helm.

“These are unprecedented times of change in health care and we need a
talented leader who has the vision and expertise to guide Lifespan’s
future strategic direction,” said Scott Laurans, chairman of Lifespan’s
board of directors. “All the candidates were exceptional and came from
major academic medical centers in extremely competitive markets and
several were physicians who had deep administrative experience.”

Laurans added, “I’m confident that we’ve chosen the best of the best in
Dr. Babineau as the next president and CEO of Lifespan. Over the past
four years, he has demonstrated that he is an intelligent, visionary and
adroit leader. He is just that kind of leader we need. Dr. Babineau will
guide the system’s strategic direction, build upon its already strong
quality and safety program, and continue to focus on system integration
to provide our patients with the best possible care experience. He will
continue to work toward a closer alignment with physicians in order to
better meet the needs of patients and to provide the most effective and
efficient use of each health care dollar.”

Babineau’s appointment comes after an extensive eight-month national
search that was led by a 13-member search committee comprised of board
members, physicians and representatives of higher education. The search
committee gathered input from dozens of individuals including senior
leaders, employees, physicians, board members, community leaders and
other key stakeholders to identify the opportunities and challenges
facing Lifespan, as well as the qualifications and leadership qualities
for the next president.

Babineau became president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital in October
2008. In 2010, Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital announced
their intention to merge and since that time Babineau has served as
president and CEO of both hospitals. In the past several years, Babineau
has overseen the creation of The Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute
at Rhode Island Hospital, the formation of the Lifespan Physician Group,
and the combined Rhode Island Hospital/The Miriam Hospital
Cardiovascular Institute and Total Joint Center.

Prior to his 2008 appointment, Babineau was the senior vice president
and chief medical officer at the University of Maryland Medical Center
and School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., where he led the effort that
resulted in the medical center being named one of Leapfrog’s Top 50
Hospitals in the country for patient safety and quality, in 2006 and
again in 2007. Having brought to Lifespan a strong background in patient
safety, Babineau has been instrumental in a number of safety and quality
initiatives at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals.

Babineau also has broad administrative and academic experience -- he is
a professor of surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown
University and was vice chairman of the division of surgery, surgical
residency program director, director of the center for minimally
invasive surgery at Boston Medical Center and surgeon-in-chief and
medical director for the Boston Medical Center Surgical Associates at
Quincy Medical Center. He has been a trustee for the University of
Massachusetts and a member of its Audit and Finance Committee.

He has excelled throughout his career; most recently he was named to
Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health
Systems.
